This month’s Mahout newsletter alerted us to the newly revamped Sher Bagh Luxury Tented Camp in Rajasthan. Beginning their 15th year of operations this October, Sher Bagh has pitched an unprecedented benchmark for style, luxury and comfort on safari with a vigorous renovation of their first ‘Relais & Châteaux’ camp. As well as refurbishing the camp’s luxury tents by creating even more space within, complete with expanded en suite bathrooms, Sher Bagh introduces two new-tented suites:
The Royal Suite
The Royal Suite comes with a generous amount of space within and a private clearing eensconced by grassed walls outside. The interiors lay spoiling emphasis on comfort, including emperor-size beds, air-conditioning, two luggage holders, a dressing table and clothes racks. Suites are furnished with impeccably designed colonial pieces in the campaign style, reminiscent of a bygone era now synonymous with the halycon days of the Raj. Chairs and cots sprawl under the shade of sleepy neem trees and the verandahs hold Kiplingesque furnishings like the Ajmer writing desk for your journals. The views from your private swimming pool offer unobstructed views of rolling hills, grasslands and knolls that form part of the Tiger Reserve while sightings of stags and antelope lining the hillsides are a regular occurrence The heated swimming pool offers a perfect place to cool off or warm up on either side of your game drives, in perfect and pristine privacy.
The Luxury Suite
Nestling under the shade of gooseberry and wild guava trees, the Luxury Suite comes with its own private walled-in garden, Jacuzzi and ‘open air shower’. The feeling here is a rich evocation of Edwardian Raj on safari. As with the Royal Suite, the finest campaign style furnishings embellish the Luxury Suite. Areas for lounging between and after game drives, in serene privacy, are guaranteed and the beds are assuredly the most comfortable you will find. The suite is enclosed by natural, hand-built, mud walls and is only a short walk from the famed Sher Bagh campfire. A netted verandah gives guests the option of being ‘enclosed’ while still able to view the greens and birdlife that the camp is teeming with.
· Private Butlers are assigned to both suites to remind their residents that while on holiday it would be a sin for them to lift a finger. The Private Butlers attend to your every want while assuring complete privacy, unpacking and packing service, shoe cleaning post safari are just some of their services on offer.
· A Spa therapist will be happy to conduct a massage anywhere and like the mobile ‘fly-camps’ of old, arrangements will simply spring up in the vicinity of the tent should you desire a massage.
· While the Sher Bagh campfire is a legendary spot to wrap up a day in the bush and swap stories with other guests, should you wish for a more private evening, private dining can be arranged around the Suites under your very own slice of a starlit sky.
· The tents come with their own ‘equippage’ for game drives. Carefully chosen binoculars, in-house cameras and mobile canteens form part of the kit that will accompany you into the National Park.
The Game Experience
With a larger fleet of customised 4×4’s than ever before, be prepared for a great game experience inside the finest habitat for wild tigers in the world. While game drives in the bush can be tiring, our vehicles and drivers ensure that you have a better, safer and more comfortable game experience. Modified and specially designed ‘Safari-Shocks”, made exclusively for Sher Bagh jeeps deliver a smoother ride while our tyres have been especially selected to suit the terrain. All Sher Bagh jeeps come with binoculars and guidebooks as well as accessories such as bean bags and camera stands for the more serious photographers. Between them, Sher Bagh drivers have over 100 years experience of scouting and tracking wildlife in Ranthambore.
While Sher Bagh is already known for its family recipes and menus, they’ve have just enlarged their outdoor kitchen and the team has been joined by some very talented new chefs, to take the culinary experience at Sher Bagh to yet another level of excellence. Freshly produced salads and ingredients from Sher Bagh’s organic herb and hegetable Garden are used to create delicious, sumptuous meals. As always, guests are welcome to participate in cooking sessions with the team if they like, either to learn new recipes or practise their own favourites or even just view preparations that go into making Sher Bagh’s dining a legendary affair.
The highly popular spa at Sher Bagh is significantly larger than before and we now offer guests the option of either a highly trained female or male therapist. Resting in a corner of the camp the Spa Tent can host therapeutic sessions in the interludes when guests are not on game drives. The spa menu includes treatments designed to relieve stresses through traditional foot or head massages or full body massages guaranteed to induce relief and a sense of well-being.
About Sher Bagh
Sher Bagh, the ‘first-born’ of the SUJÁN Family, will complete 15 years this season. It continues to be the perfect base from which to explore Ranthambhore’s abundance of flora & fauna. In the previous season, tiger sightings at Ranthambhore were recorded at 81% with guests of Sher Bagh seeing at least two tigers per day on average, in addition to regular sightings of leopard and sloth bears and a huge diversity of other wildlife, including birds. The ever-popular guided excursions to Ranthambhore Fort continue.
